Installing loading bay protection
Before installing loading dock protectors, be sure to carry out a full risk assessment of the area in question.
- What kind of vehicles are operating in the area - depending on the vehicle type may determine what protection equipment will suffice for your facility. While smaller barriers are fine for most forklifts etc, larger HGVs and articulated lorries will require extra protection. Truck wheel stops may also help to bring the HGVs to a stop within set parking bays.
- What assets are exposed to damage - be sure to take note and observe what is susceptible to damage. Exposed pillars, doors or other assets will need to be protected individually. This may include installing loading bay wheel guides, barriers or loading bay buffers.
- Note vehicle speeds in the area - the faster vehicles are allowed to travel, the higher the risk of accidents. Vehicle speeds should be reduced as much as possible on approach to loading bays. However, equipment required on site may also be determined by how fast vehicles are travelling. Bigger, heavier vehicles travelling at speed will require heavier duty loading bay protection options.
